Graffiti Case Study

“Graffiti not only looks bad, it also makes passengers and the people who live near the railway feel unsafe” Network Rail

Graffiti removal costs Network Rail more than £3.5 million every year. It is unsightly and often causes offence and can be subject to a legal abatement notice forcing the removal in a given time period.

BCM Construction has dedicated teams in place with over 15 years’ experience, all of which are equipped with specially fitted vehicles, equipment and the latest products enabling them to deal with the removal of graffiti from all types of surfaces including wood, brick, stonework, steel and other metal work all over the railway infrastructure.

Network Rail prioritises the removal of graffiti in the following order:

  1. Graffiti that impacts on safety (e.g. graffiti on signs)
  2. Offensive, racist & sexist graffiti
  3. Graffiti that can be seen by passengers & the general public
  4. Graffiti on railway routes: location cabinets, sub-stations & relay rooms
  5. Other graffiti as resources allow - with priority given to large amounts of graffiti or graffiti that has been there for a long time.

Works can include removing graffiti from many different structures such as Signal Gantries, Cable Ducts, Control Boxes and Bridges. In some cases obtaining access to these structures is not straight forward, requiring BCM management to organise works in and around possessions or road closures. All the traffic management work is carried out by BCM competent operatives that are fully trained in the NRSWA and supported by competent Site Managers.

When over bridges have been graffitied, BCM will organise an agreed road / lane closure with the Local Authority and can access using our Versa lift transit operated by BCM staff who are trained to IPAF standards.

Graffiti is a big issue for Network Rail. If graffiti isallowed to stay, others will feel free to add to it; often undesirable types – drunks, addicts, criminals and the like. By providing teams of fully trained and qualified operatives with dedicated equipment we are helping Network Rail, operating a 24 hour call-out service, to rid the stations of graffiti and litter as quickly and efficiently as possible. This acts as a deterrent as the graffiti perpetrator wants the ‘piece’ to be seen by as many people as possible.
