Barnham Signal Box Construction Case Study

As part of the Barnham and Bognor Regis Area Infrastructure Upgrade Project, a new signal box was required at a brown-field site in Barnham.

BCM Construction was contracted for the design and build of the new signal box. Together with the Network Rail team the scope for the signal box was developed. BCM Construction worked closely with Network Rail to establish what the client and end user expectations and functional requirements were prior to entering into detailed design.

A brown-field site was identified adjacent to the railway in a disused coal storage yard. The signal box was then constructed using traditional building methods. It is a two storey building with climate controlled equipment rooms situated on the ground floor and an operational floor at first floor level with panoramic 270˚ views of the surrounding railway. The signal box was completed on time and within budget and signalling controls were transferred from the old signal box to the new.

Works completed by BCM Construction at Barnham:

  • Project Management.
  • Building Design.
  • Construction of the new signal box.
  • Construction of compound with car parking, security fencing and remote controlled gates.
  • Design and install platform M&E systems such as power, lighting, air conditioning and CCTV.
