Eight Railway Arches at Capworth Street, Walthamstow were transformed by BCM Construction, as part of Network Rail’s business strategy to upgrade its 9000 Railway Arches to provide business space to let for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), available for a wide range of uses.
BCM Construction won this design and build contract by competitive tender to provide four units for rent. The works included the construction of a new portal framed building independent of the Arches structure on both the east and west elevations
The works included:
- Asbestos removal
- Demolition of existing wood/timber yard facilities
- Piling & reinforced concrete ring beams
- Construction of 2 lean-to structures
- New concrete floors throughout
- Arch lining into drainage channels
- New lighting and power points throughout
- New mains water and drainage
- New kitchenette and toilet facilities
- Roller shutters and sliding entrance gates
- JOS cleaning to all exposed brickwork
- Vegetation clearance & tree preservation
The site was subject to a tree preservation order therefore arboricultural surveys were carried out and as a result, the design was altered to protect the tree roots. Now that the works have been completed the tree is flourishing and enhances the site.
