BCM Construction identified that one of the major risks to our site staff was the hazard of working in and around On Track Plant (OTP). Working in conjunction with Keltbray Rail we developed a half day ‘OTP Awareness’ session to highlight the dangers of working in and around OTP.
The session was split into two elements:
- Classroom session with an OTP trainer going through the various types of OTP’s, accidents and incidents that had recently occurred within the rail industry and the danger / no go areas around OTP.
- Practical session which allowed the staff to physically see what the Machine Operator can and cannot view from his cab. Staff were taken into the cab of an RRV and shown the various blind spots around the machine, this also allowed an excellent two-way communication between the staff and the Machine Operator and Machine Controller as to how good working practices could be developed.
The first of these OTP Awareness sessions was carried out in March 2011 and was attended by 30 staff. As part of our 2012 HSE enhancements we will be rolling out more sessions to which our clients will also be invited.
