In May 2010 BCM Construction were awarded the construction of 3 substations as part of the Power Supply Enhancements Programme of works.
At the Eden site the existing equipment was located at the top of a railway embankment and the new site had to be constructed at the same level. This resulted in the construction of a reinforced earth retaining structure to raise the ground level for the new equipment. The reinforced earth wall was constructed using Tensar interlocking geo-blocks. This is a sustainable construction method using recycled fill material in the build up of the reinforced earth structure. The construction programme was accelerated on this site to meet commissioning deadlines resulting in the site being constructed in 7 weeks.
BCM Works at Eden included:
- Construction Project Management.
- Access road construction across 300m of farmland.
- Temporary protection and bridging of an existing water course.
- Construction of the reinforced earth retaining wall and retaining structure.
- Construction of reinforced concrete foundations for electrical equipment.
- Construction of Under Track Crossing (UTX) for HV Substation Feeders.
- Installation of cable containment routes from the UTX to the new substation.
