The Basingstoke Signalling centre is part of Network Rail’s national programme of signalling, power, telecommunications and P.Way (Permanent Way) upgrades. The existing signalling and telecommunications systems date from the 1950’s and have become unreliable and costly to maintain, with very few spares available for key items of equipment.
Basingstoke Area Infrastructure Upgrade Project (BAIUP) is a multifunction upgrade of signalling equipment, power distribution from sub-stations, telecoms via the national Fixed Telecom (FTN) Programme, and points and crossing modifications. It is designed to improve reliability and train capacity between Waterloo and Southampton and Salisbury on the Wessex Route.
BCM Construction was contracted to Atkins Rail until August 2008 when they took over the Principal Contractor role for Network Rail. Works on the BAIUP included:
- Set-up of 1000 sq. metres of Modular Office Accommodation
- Project Management
- Installation of Cable Routes
- Laying of New Cable
- Final Commissioning
- Recovery of Redundant Equipment
- Installation of Signalling
- Equipment Case Bases and Stagings
