Flitwick Platforms Case Study

At Flitwick Station, as part of the Thameslink Programme, BCM Construction were contracted to provide a design and build solution for all 4 platform extensions:

  • Platform 1: Extended 76m
  • Platform 2: Extended 79.5m
  • Platform 3: Extended 77.5m
  • Platform 4: Extended 76.8m

The platforms were constructed using traditional precast beams and hollow core planks on a crosswall construction. The extension on platform 1 was mainly to the London End, however a small lift to the Country End ramp was constructed to allow for driver-only access. This was repeated on platform 3.

Works within platforms 2 and 3 included a new foundation, which was formed to accommodate a new OLE structure. Planks and beams were installed around the structure with a glass reinforced plastic (GRP) cover to provide access for Network Rail’s maintenance.

The main extension on platform 4 was to the Country End of the existing platform, with a smaller extension to the London End. Also at the London End, a new signal foundation was constructed to the rear of the platform. Due to access difficulties, BCM Construction had to gain access via a private property adjacent to the platform to allow for concrete pumps and the delivery of materials.

Other Works Included:

  • Installation of tactiles behind existing coping stones on the existing Platform 3.
  • Installation of steel and timber fencing.
  • Installation of lamp columns.
  • Installation of cable trays to the underneath and front edge of the platforms.
  • Due to the Country End extension on platform 4, a section of car park was removed.
  • BCM Construction carried out additional works: forming new parking bays, curbing and line painting to Flitwick County Council Car Park.
