Harpenden Platforms Case Study

As part of the Thameslink Programme, all four platforms at Harpenden Station were extended:
Platform 1 - 79m to South.
Platform 2 - 53m to North.
Platform 3 - 56m to South.
Platform 4 - 82m to North.

The platforms were constructed using precast beams and hollow core planks on a crosswall construction, steel under-bridge spanning platforms were installed to platforms 1 and 3. Due to poor ground on the embankment, concrete mini piles were used to support the foundations for the platform 1 extensions.

Other Works Included:

  • Tactile paving stones were installed throughout existing platforms 1 and 4.
  • New brick-faced, reinforced concrete bridge abutment was constructed to accommodate the steel deck for platfrom 1 with collision beam.
  • New lamp columns and bulkhead lighting were installed on all platforms.

Challenges at Harpenden:

Due to a late contract award the programme was very challenging in particular the fabrication of the steel bridge spanning platform decks and all associated civil works in advance of the Christmas possessions. The Harpenden area was affected by very cold weather and heavy snow in the run up to Christmas. Thanks to some innovative concrete design and curing methods, and a momentous effort by the site team, the bridge spanning decks were successfully installed over the Christmas period.
