As part of the Thameslink Programme, all four platforms at Luton Airport Parkway were extended by 80m. This station serves Luton Airport and is very close to the flight path. In order to avoid the crash zone surrounding the airport, the platforms were only extended in the north.
Luton Airport Parkway Station was originally built in 1999 therefore the remit for the extensions was to match the existing station and its platforms. The platform construction consisted of the following items of work:
- Platform Drainage consisting of 13m deep soak-aways along the platform footprints.
- Removal of Japanese Knotweed contamination from the site footprint.
- Platform Design.
- Project Management.
Platform Construction:
In keeping with the existing platforms, platforms 1 and 4 were constructed using reinforced earth and inter-locking geo-blocks. This was a solid fill type construction with a block paved surface. Due to the presence of a railway embankment on Platform 4, the reinforced earth walls are up to 4m in height. The island platforms were constructed using pre-cast front wall units which created a swimming pool type effect. A foam concrete fill was used to build the platform up below surface level, followed by a block paved surface.
Other Works Included
- Alterations to existing platform lighting.
- Design & Installation of platform M&E systems (lighting & public address) on extensions.
- Gauge Clearance Works on the existing platforms (re-alignment of platform coping-stones).
