At Luton Station, BCM Construction were contracted to widen the existing platforms to allow for the new track alignment and to extend platforms 1,2,3,4 and 5.
Platform Extensions:
All Platforms at Luton Station were constructed using a combination of traditional beam and hollow core planks on a crosswall construction. Platforms 1,2,3 and 4 required a soak-away for drainage, these were constructed under the platforms between the foundations. Platform 5 also required a soak-away but, unlike platforms 1,2,3 and 4 the soak-away was constructed to the rear of the platform.
Platform 1 – Extended 85.8m Country End of the existing platform.
Platform 2 – Extended 85.5m Country End of the existing platform.
Platform 3 – Extended 83.2m Country End of the existing platform.
Platform 4 – Extended 34.3m Country End of the existing platform.
Platform 5 – Extended 35.5m London End of the existing platform.
The new extensions make the useable platform length 245m which will allow for the new 12 car trains as part of Network Rail’s Thameslink Programme.
Platform Widening:
In conjunction with the platform extensions, the existing platforms also needed to be widened. BCM Construction carried out these works during possessions to enable the new concrete foundations to be constructed on platforms 1, 2 and 3. Over the Easter period, all the tarmac was removed from the existing platforms to expose the newly formed foundations and allow for the beams to be anchored and hollow core planks to be installed. BCM Construction then installed new coping stones, tactile paving and tarmac throughout the existing platforms before completing the line painting.
