As part of the Thameslink Programme, all four platforms at Mill Hill Broadway were extended by 80m.
This station was unusual for a number of reasons:
- Constraints on site meant that platforms were extended by ~40m to the north and ~40m to the south.
- The station shares a boundary with the M1 motorway - access was severely restricted presenting a logistical challenge.
- Two different construction methods were employed for the extensions to the north and to the south, resulting in a combination of modular steel platforms and the more traditional cross-walls with block and beam construction.
- Poor ground conditions resulted in a fully piled foundation solution requiring over 200 hollow tubular steel piles.
- A permanent way re-alignment programme was being carried out concurrently during the construction programme. This presented the engineers with the challenge of working to a virtual track alignment.
The close proximity of a residential development made noise monitoring and planning a crucial consideration when programming works.
Works completed by BCM at Mill Hill Broadway:
- Project management
- Platform design
- Piling and groundworks
- Platform construction
- Design & renew M&E systems on the existing station platforms
- Design and install platform M&E systems (lighting and public address) on extensions
