Radlett Platforms Case Study

BCM Construction were contracted to provide a design and build solution to extend platforms 1 and 2 at Radlett Station as part of Network Rail’s Thameslink Programme. The Platforms were constructed using Network Rail standard design for platforms which consists of crosswalls at 6m centres with hollow core pre-cast concrete planks spanning between walls.

Some piled foundations were required at Radlett due to ground conditions and the presence of drainage culverts beneath the platforms. Piling at Radlett Station was only able to be completed during 12 hour weekend possessions. The piles consisted of a 10m x 450mm diameter to the rear of both platforms, and 18m x 450mm diameter to the front of the platforms to allow for the overhang. These piles were installed either side of the culvert and sewers that pass under the existing railway infrastructure. BCM Construction had two piling rigs working at all times throughout the project to enable the programme to complete on schedule.

The platforms were extended:
Platform 1: 77.7m
Platform 2: 82.5m

Works Included:

  • Installation of lamp columns.
  • Installation of tactiles behind existing copers on Platform 3.
  • Installation of cable trays beneath the platforms.
  • Installation of steel and timber fencing.
  • Installation of GRC litter screens.
