Electrification

The Enable Infrastructure team has a long history of delivering rail electrification and decarbonisation projects going back to the early 00’s. Then known as BCM Construction, the team were initially involved in substation construction projects for clients like Siemens and Amec on the Southern Region Power Supply Upgrade. This project included an extensive programme of new substation builds and substation upgrades. From there, BCM went on to deliver projects directly for Network Rail while continuing to deliver for the Amec/Siemens Joint Venture who moved on to West Coast Mainline. Over the past 2 decades our company has delivered around 100 substation (new or upgrade) projects.

From around 2010 onwards, the company expanded its service offering to include HV distribution, and the renewals of 33kV HV Feeder Cables for Network Rail. This started off with the company delivering the civil cable routes and installing cable but using a specialist sub-contractor to joint and commission, but since circa 2015 the company developed an in-house Power Systems team with its own electrical engineers and commissioning teams.

Over the past 20 years our company has played an important role in many of the UK’s most prestigious electrification projects, developing our offering over time. We have contributed to Southern Region PSU, West Coast Mainline PSU, Great Western Electrification, Midland Mainline Electrification, and the Core Valley Lines Electrification. As well as large electrification schemes, where we would have delivered mainly substation builds; HV distribution works; and substation commissioning; we have delivered HV Feeder Renewal frameworks for Network Rail, and HV Infrastructure projects for Transport for London.

In recent years we have been able to pull more of our civil engineering capabilities into our works on electrification programme’s by getting involved in route clearance works for OHLE. These projects mainly involve the alteration of bridges (usually raising the height) to make the physical space for the Overhead Line Equipment on newly electrified lines.

After a rebrand in 2022, BCM became Enable Infrastructure which is a NERS Accredited, NICEIC Accredited, Principal Contractor who can meet any of your HV distribution (up to 132kV), substation design/build/commission needs.
