BCM Construction support two major Network Rail blockades over the festive period7th January 2020
Working in collaboration with clients Amey, VolkerFitzpatrick and our sub-contractors Crewit, McGarry’s, Fastlay, RJC, Easymix, Llynch, Pro Rail, Force One, Geo Observations and Acorn Waste we delivered the civil and power associated works at Kettering and Stratford safely and on time.
Starting on both sites on the 24th of December and finishing on the 1st of January, we worked 16 shifts at Kettering and 5 at Stratford, deploying 180 individuals and covering 907 person shifts across both blockades.
Our scope involved four significant platform extensions which included canopy reconstruction and building a 7m high and 21m long brick wall. BCM Construction also carried out extensive UTX construction, drainage works, HV cable installation, trough transitions and connections, installation of new chambers and route works. We provided substantial plant and materials including 1 to 8 tonne excavators and mini diggers, 90+ cubes of concrete, mortar, tarmac and more than 16000 bricks.
As part of ENABLE, the award-winning consortium of SMEs, BCM Construction was able to overcome several plant and material challenges through integrated planning and deploying innovative solutions. These included sourcing materials at a time when most suppliers were closed for the festive period and using machinery on site to mix the mortar rather than the operatives having to do so manually for the entire blockade. Other innovate solutions used were suction excavation and material extraction services using road-rail suction vehicles, all of which resulted in safer working practices, reduced risk, increased efficiencies and minimised disruption.
Huge thanks to our teams for the safe and successful delivery of the works. We are extremely proud to have been part of the orange army to have successfully delivered £111m of railway upgrades over the festive period, providing better and more reliable services to passenger and freight operators.
