STEM Volunteering – May 201917th June 2019
Partnering with the Engineering Development Trust (EDT), BCM Construction supported a Go4SET STEM event at Lady Margaret Girls School, in Parsons Green, London in May 2019.
Three volunteers from BCM Construction acted as assessors at the industrial cadet graduation day. One of our engineers, a planner and commercial manager joined forces and teamed up with volunteers from other companies to listen to pitches from the young people about their projects.
Each group of young people had been tasked with using science and technology to develop a new initiative that would help people spend money in better, more efficient ways or to develop an initiative that would positively impact the environment and help people to be more sustainable.
The three volunteers committed to one day of volunteering plus preparation time prior to the day to read the proposals from the groups of young people.
They were asked to interview the teams, confer with fellow assessors and give confidential, verbal feedback about overall performance to the groups. Each group of assessors scored 5 of the 10 groups projects.
Three awards were then given out on the day once the scoring had been finalised for:
- Best Overall Project
- Most Innovative Project Award
- Best Teamwork Award
Research has shown that the exposure of younger age groups to STEM related employers, encourages more students to choose post-16 courses in these subject areas, eventually leading to the study of STEM degrees at university.
The BCM staff involved helped to engage the groups of young people and give the groups encouragement and support so that they might consider future careers in science and engineering.
